The Queensland squad for the second game of the 2014 State Of Origin series has been named; with selectors naming an extended bench to cover for a number of injury concerns.
Interchange forward Josh Papalli has already been ruled out of the clash and key players Greg Inglis, Billy Slater and Daly Cherry-Evans have all entered the Queensland camp under an injury cloud.
Sam Thaiday and Jacob Lillyman have been called back into the Queensland squad, replacing Cooper Cronk and Papalli, while Will Chambers and Willie Tonga have been added to the extended bench to cover for Inglis.
Brisbane Broncos halfback Ben Hunt and Raiders flyer Anthony Milford have both been called into the State Of Origin fold for the first time and Chairman Of Selectors Des Morris has revealed that there are a number of scenarios in which the youngsters could make their Queensland debuts.
“We want them to get the experience but their form has dictated that they should be there, that they should be given an opportunity,” Morris said.
“Daly Cherry-Evans is under a bit of doubt so Ben Hunt is obviously going to be a chance and if Billy and Greg are both out, Anthony will come into the game somewhere.
“We don’t want a disrupted camp where players are coming and going and nobody knows what’s going on.”
Cherry-Evans and Slater have both been battling injuries that they suffered in the opening game of the State Of Origin series, while Inglis suffered a high ankle sprain in the South Sydney Rabbitohs win over the New Zealand Warriors on Saturday.
Morris said that all three are confident that they will be able to take their place for Queensland at ANZ Stadium next weekend, but revealed that Queensland would work out in a number of different formations before Meninga decides on his match day 17 this weekend.
“All the guys believe they will be fit and ready to go but they’re obviously a bit biased and desperate to play,” Morris said.
“We need to make sure that if they’re not right, we’ve got sufficient cover there.
“With Greg getting injured in WA, he’s hopeful he’ll be right but others are saying he won’t be.
“We’ll let the medical staff get a good look at him and then come to a decision.”
Queensland are currently $2.57 outsiders to win the second game of the 2014 State Of Origin Series at ANZ Stadium on Wednesday June 18 and are available at a quote of $3.30 to score their ninth straight State Of Origin Series win.
